Do you own an internal clock as a speaker

Time is precious to you as a speaker, and even more so for your audience. I am often asked “How much do I say?”, “What should I cover?” and “How to deliver all that I want to say?”

Part of the considerations is to ask ourselves as the speaker “How much time do I have?”. This may be concretely given, for example, by the conference organiser; or it may be subtly given by our bosses when he posed a question along the office walkway. If we have a wise assessment of the amount of time we have (be it 20 minutes or just 2 minutes), by listening to the way the question was asked and observing the mannerism and body language of our bosses, then we can quickly go to our internal clock and determine how much content can we provide. A 20-minute speech is vastly different from a 2-minute speech.

I’ve given numerous speeches formally and informally that my internal clock can guide me on how much content I can deliver within that limited space of time. This internal clock will very quickly help me decipher what is the most relevant and critical content that I should prioritise and say it before the time and my audience’s patience runs out. This internal clock will also train my public speaking discipline to get to the point, be organised and be concise.

The more you oil your internal clock through practice and experience, the more precise your internal clock will perform.

Mike Ng

What determines the functions and gears of your internal clock? These include your normal speaking rate (words per minute), your language abilities, your familiarity with the subject matter, how often do you speak about it, do you know how to organise your content quickly and purposefully, how much does the audience already know about the topic, do you need to provide just information or do you need to persuade with the information, etc.

An effective speaker worries not about the lack of time, he only worries about not knowing how much time he has.

Mike Ng

Keep tuning and keep consulting your internal clock. Always have a sense of time-keeping within you to deliver concise and purposeful content within the given time. The next time you know how much time you have, you will also know how much and what to say. Soon, you will come across as a highly productive person, a part of your public speaking persona. What’s the Relevance

We often spend countless weeks and days to conduct a thorough research and present a highly informative speech to our audience. With strong public speaking techniques like a speech structure to enable us to organise and remember our content, vocal power and enunciation, as well as engaging gestures, we will be able to retain our audience’s interests to a large extent.

But, if our audience cannot relate to the extensive facts and figures, and they begin to wonder what is the relevance and purpose behind the vast information that they have heard, will we achieve our intended speech purpose?

My advice to many speakers is to start with the end in mind. Why are you presenting this speech? What is your speech purpose and message? Is your speech message useful and valuable to your audience? What do you want the audience to walk away with after hearing your speech? Will it be memorable? Then, you intelligently choose the most relevant content to support your message and move your audience. Most importantly, you need to make your speech purpose and message loud and clear as soon as you can in your speech. And tie your content closely to the speech purpose and message from the start to the end.

Colourful Ways to Deliver a “Leadership Persona” Speech

It was by chance that my speaker Alfred had delivered a colourful 8min speech on leadership styles by referring to one’s persona. Here’s a video recording of one of my evaluation speeches at my toastmasters home club when I provided feedback on his speech. Would you like to receive candid feedback, more importantly before, and possibly even after you deliver your speeches?

Get a Dog! Get a Frog!

An interactive workshop with these full-time students from Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Business Management, Diploma in Mass Media Management. These young learners certainly didn’t stop learning during their school holidays. They came well prepared with their passionate presentations. I was convinced of the clear benefits of getting a dog and a frog as my pet. They are simply too cute to resist!

Within a short span of 2 hours, our focus was to enable the group to discover for themselves the strengths that they already possess; and the little areas which are affecting their effectiveness as a speaker, as a presenter. Interestingly, many of them have used rhetorical devices like asking relevant questions to trigger emotional appeals, before dishing out plenty of facts. They were naturally conversational and comfortable to share what they know like the back of their hands. And their strongest attribute is… they spoke with lots of beliefs.

A few healthy takeaways include the need to slow down their speaking rate, to take a deliberate pause before moving into another fresh point, to reinforce their speech purpose with a strong conclusion, to simplify their slides and to be generous with their eye contact.

Overall, their feedback after the fruitful session showed that we have all learned together a few tips to become more effective communicators:

I learnt many new things throughout this workshop and it has allowed me to identify my flaws and improve on my public speaking skills. The activities were appropriate and enjoyable!

Olsen Bong

The workshop was great fun and I learnt many new things about the nuances of public speaking. The activities were very casual so I didn’t feel pressured at all.

Cedric Chan

This workshop was fun and engaging. It helped me take a better look at my own presentation skills. Overall, it helped me to pinpoint and realise how just a few minor changes can create a whole new impact on my presentation!

Dorothy Ng

The workshop was interesting and I was able to learn a lot more about what to take note when presenting. For example, vocal variation, the speed I was speaking at and audience analysis. Overall, I really enjoyed the workshop. 🙂

Noelle Lee

This workshop was very eye opening and really made me realise how I was while making a presentation. Other than this, the activities were solid and fun!

The lessons you learn from such a leader will surely follow you throughout the rest of your career

“My public speaking persona is fact-based, results-driven and future-oriented. What’s yours?”

– Lee Junhui

At certain fortuitous moments in our careers, we are blessed with the chance to work with a leader who is competent, generous with his wisdom, and unafraid to get his hands dirty. The lessons you learn from such a leader will surely follow you throughout the rest of your career.

For me, Mike is that leader and mentor. During his time as my supervisor, Mike was always intuitive and articulate enough to tease out the different areas of improvement I needed to focus on in my work. Yet he is also kind and empathetic, taking the time to engage with me and provide guidance in areas outside of my work-life.

It is rare for employees and their supervisors to develop personal relationships outside of their professional ones, and even more uncommon for an employee to write a testimonial for his ex-supervisor. I hope that this is proof enough of the impact that Mike has had in my life, both professionally and personally. And it is my hope that Mike will have the chance to have the same kind of impact in your life too.

Mike is very personal in his approach, very methodical in his thinking and has an amicable personality

“My public speaking persona is having fun, engaging, impactful and solving issues that matters. What’s yours?”

– Danny Goh

I have known Mike for a number of years. He is well versed with business strategies in international trade and is an active member of his Toastmasters Club. Tapping into his experience, I had invited him overseas to some of my company’s product introductory seminars and had shared some of my sales strategies/pitches with him to assess its effectiveness.

Mike is very passionate in his roles as a public speaking consultant and an advisor on business strategies. He often gives unsolicited views and will be able to get to the root of the problem with his assessment. He is able to provide an insightful evaluation of my sales strategies/pitches and enhance it so that I am able to impart a deeper understanding of the product knowledge to my target audience!

Mike is very personal in his approach, very methodical in his thinking and has an amicable personality. He is able to reach out to everyone in your organisation, irrespective of age and qualification, to coach and to mentor any person in public speaking.

I sincerely recommend you to Mike.

Mike is a well-refined speaker who is able to command the stage strongly with his confidence and charisma

“My public speaking persona is confident, dramatic, with a tinge of light-hearted humour and a strong focus on speech-value. What’s yours?”

– Tan Qing Lin

Mike is a well-refined speaker who is able to command the stage strongly with his confidence and charisma.

More than being an excellent speaker, he stands out from other public speaking mentors that I have met by being able to impart these skills to others effectively. He is an observant and empathetic mentor, and I have seen many of his mentees shown remarkable improvements to become formidable speakers themselves.

As a public speaking enthusiast, I had approached Mike for his feedback at various stages of my journey and received useful feedback that had helped me improve over the years. I am happy that Mike is starting ‘Public Speaking Persona’ to provide his mentorship to a wider audience, and I am confident that he will deliver significant values to his clients.

It was music to my ears when I first heard my audience laughed heartily at my “revamped” speech

“My public speaking persona is fun-loving straight talker with tons of optimism. What’s yours?”

– Catherine Chai

As an entrepreneur, consultant and author, my work involves lots of high stakes presentations. Over the years, I learn how to speak professionally through trial and error; watching others and getting personalised feedback. So far so good but deep down, I want to express this humorous side of me in my communication and use humour as a tool to break down barriers. But I struggled to bring this out. I know there’s a better and faster way to learn this. Mike is the better and faster way.

As a mentor, Mike examined my speeches with microscopic attention and with precision, he pointed out specific ways to enhance my speeches that aligns with my intention. He helped me tremendously with crafting more of “me” into my presentation. It was music to my ears when I first heard my audience laughed heartily at my “revamped” speech, and more and more of those laughters in subsequent speeches! I can’t thank Mike enough for helping me get there. Mike has been an exceptional mentor to me. His generosity to share his knowledge and wisdom comes from his heart. It is so nice to have a mentor who is invested in my success. Mike is warm and welcoming, and I have so much fun working with him. If you are looking for a coach to transform your communication and public speaking skills, look no further, Mike is your answer.

Mike is someone who has solid expertise and experience in the public speaking space

My public speaking persona is passionate speech delivery, engaging and entertaining content, humour sprinkled generously, along with a strong persuasive message! What’s yours?

– Prakash Ramalingam

When I was a first-time leader in a nonprofit organization, I needed someone to guide me in the right direction as I struggled with handling my team effectively.

That is when Mike personally reached out to me, understood the situation I was facing in detail, and shared with me some great and practical insights on effective leadership communication. Public speaking is not always about speaking on stage. Mike’s advice on communicating with clarity to team members, discussing sensitive issues as a leader, and thereby becoming a leader who inspires is something I would cherish in my professional career.

Mike is someone who has solid expertise and experience in the public speaking space. Combined with his practical and detail-oriented approach to any problem, I would recommend him to anyone who needs an expert guidance on leadership and communication.
